Free tool for this:Green card photo maker
Applications for a green card, such as Form I-485, usually need two passport-style photos. Here's what USCIS asks for.
Size and layout
| Rule | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Photo size | 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm) |
| Head height | 1 to 1⅜ inches, from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin |
| Background | White to off-white |
| Prints | Two identical photos, unmounted and unretouched |
Print 6 photos on one sheet
The green card photo maker crops your photo to 2 × 2 inches and places 6 copies on a standard 4 × 6 inch photo. Print it at a pharmacy or photo shop for the price of a single print, choosing actual size / 100%, then cut along the lines. That gives you enough for the application and a spare set.
Labelling the photos
- Lightly write your name on the back of each photo in pencil or felt pen.
- Make sure the writing doesn't dent the photo or bleed through, and let the ink dry.
- Put the photos in a small envelope with your name on it and attach it to the application.
Other rules
- Recent colour photo, facing the camera with a neutral expression.
- No headwear unless worn for religious reasons.
- Plain background without shadows.
Always follow the instructions on the form you're filing, as some USCIS forms have their own photo notes.
