Short answer: an Australian passport photo must be 35–40 mm wide and 45–50 mm high, with your face (chin to crown) 32–36 mm, on a plain white or light grey background. It must be a professional print on glossy photo paper, so you can't print it at home on an inkjet printer.
Official size and rules
| Rule | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Photo size | 35–40 mm wide × 45–50 mm high |
| Face size | 32–36 mm from chin to crown |
| Background | Plain white or light grey, contrasting with your face |
| Age of photo | Taken in the last 6 months |
| Expression | Facing the camera, eyes open, neutral expression, head not tilted (over 3 years old) |
| Glasses | Not allowed, unless you can't remove them for medical reasons |
| Printing | Colour print on glossy photo paper of at least 200 gsm; inkjet prints are not accepted |
Babies and young children
- Children under 3 may have their mouth open.
- No one else can appear in the photo, so no parent's hands, and no toys.
Where to get the photo
The Australian Passport Office advises against online photo services and phone apps for passport photos. Get them taken at a professional photo service, such as a photo studio, pharmacy or post office that offers passport photos, and ask for prints that meet Australian passport rules.
Visa photos are different
An Australian visa application in ImmiAccount takes a digital photo upload instead of a print. For that, you can use the Australia visa photo maker to crop your photo to 35 × 45 mm.
Common reasons for rejection
- Face too small or too large (outside 32–36 mm).
- Shadows on the face or background, or a coloured background.
- Glasses, or a tilted head.
- Home-printed inkjet photos.
